Chloroxylenol Uses, Side Effects, and More

 Chloroxylenol

Brand name:- Dettol,Dettolin 1% with menthol 0.45%

It has a phenol coefficient of 70; does not cosgulate proteins,is noncorrosive, nonirritating  to intact skin, but efficacy is reduced by oraganic matter. It is poorly water soluble; the commercial 4.8% solution (Dettol) is prepared in 9% terpinol and 13% alcohol.

Pharmacodynamic:-

Chloroxylenol is a substituted phenol which has been widely used for many years as an ingredient of antiseptic and disinfectant products intended for external use . It is known to be bactericidal in low concentration to a wide range of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria .

Mechanics of action:-

As a phenol antiseptic, it is believed that the hydroxyl -OH groups of the chloroxylenol molecule binds to certain proteins on the cell membrane of bacteria, and disrupts the membrane so as to allow the contents of the bacterial cell to leak out 1. This allows chloroxylenol to enter the bacterial cell to bind further with more proteins and enzymes to disable the cell's functioning 1. At particularly high concentrations of chloroxylenol, the protein and nucleic acid content of targeted bacterial cells become coagulated and cease to function, leading to rapid cell death.

Used:-

Used for surgical antisepsis,to control bacteria, algae and fungi in adhesives, emulsions, paints and wash tanks. It also is used to sanitize bathroom premises, diaper pails, laundry equipment, human bedding and pet living quarters in households, hospitals and other institutions.

Calcium Uses, Side Effects, and More

Calcium Brand name:- calcinol, cipcal ,M ilical, Calcium sandoze, Shelcal ,  Macalvit . Calcium is a mineral found in over-the-counter supplements or prescription formulations used for the treatment of specific medical conditions related to calcium deficiency.  PREPARATION:-  1. Calcium carbonate (40% Ca) : It is an insoluble, tasteless and nonirritating salt. Reacts with gastric HCL  to form cholride, and can be used as antacid. It is the most common salt present in calcium supplements, but gastric acid is required for  converting it into the absorbable form . Calcium availability from it is poor in patients taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) ,H² blocker, and in elderly. 2.  Calcium citrate ( as tetrahydrate , 21% Ca²+ ) : Slightly soluble in water, but dissolve well in presence of HCL . It is nonirritating and is used in supplements; absorption in patients taking PPIs/H² blocker and elderly is satisfactory. 3. Calcium gluconate (9% Ca) : is availa...
