Ciprofloxacin
Brand name:- Cifran , ciplox, ciprobid , ciprolet 250,500,750mg tab, 200mg/100ml i.v infusion, 3mg / ml eye drops.
Ciprofloxacin is a second generation fluoroquinolone used to treat various susceptible bacterial infections.
Pharmacodynamic :-
Ciprofloxacin is a second generation fluoroquinolone that is active against many Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. It produces its action through inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Ciprofloxacin binds to bacterial DNA gyrase with 100 times the affinity of mammalian DNA gyrase. There is no cross resistance between fluoroquinolones and other classes of antibiotics, so it may be of clinical value when other antibiotics are no longer effective. Ciprofloxain and its derivatives are also being investigated for its action against malaria, cancers, and AIDS.
Pharmacokinetics:-
Ciprofloxacin is rapidly absorbed orally, but food delays absorption, and first pass metabolism occurs. Ciprofloxacin (and other FQs ) have good tissue penetrability: concentration in lung, sputum, muscle, prostate and phagocytes exceed that in plasma, but CSF and aqueous levels are lower. It is excreted primarily in urine, both by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Urinary and biliary concentration are 10-50 fold higher than plasma.
Mechanics of action:-
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone class. It is active against some Gram-positive and many Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting a type II topoisomerase (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, necessary to separate bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division. Bacterial DNA fragmentation will occur as a result of inhibition of the enzymes.
Used:-
This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu).
Side effects:-
Headache, Dizziness, Gastrointestinal disorder, Joint pain, Urticaria.
