ATENOLOL / S(-) ATENOLOL

 ATENOLOL

BRAND NAME:-BETACARD ,ATEN,TENORIM 25,50,100mg tab.

Atenolol is a beta blocker having low lipid solubility. All beta blockers, irrespective of associated properties, exert similar antihypertensive effects.Drugs with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA) cause less/no reduction of HR and c.o. but lower vascular resistance by Beta2 agonism.

Medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure and heart-associated chest pain. Atenolol, however, does not seem to improve mortality in those with high blood pressure. Other uses include the prevention of migraines and treatment of certain irregular heart beats.

ATENOLOL is Cardioselectivity  drug , these are more potent in blocking cardiac Beta1 than bronchial Beta2 receptors.

CARDIOSELECTIVITY:-

These drug are more potent in blocking cardiac Beta1 than bronchial Beta2 receptors. Selectivity is only relative and is lost at high doses.

Their features are:-

1. Lower propensity to cause bronchoconstriction, but even these drug should usually be avoided in asthmatic and COPD patients.

2. Less Interference with carbohydrates metabolism and less inhibition of glycogenolysis during hypoglycemia --safer in diabetics.

3. Lower incidence of cold hand and feet ,less chances of precipitation Raynaud's phenomenon.

4.No/less deleterious effects on blood lipid profile.

5. Ineffective in suppression essential tremor.

6. Less liable to impair exercise capacity.

MECHANISM AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:-

A relatively selective Beta1 blocker having low lipid solubility. It is in completely absorbed orally, but first pass METABOLISM is not significant. Because of longer duration of action, once daily dose is often sufficient. Side effects related to CNS action are less likely. No deleterious effects on lipid profile have been noted. Effective dose for most individuals falls in a narrow rang . It is one of the most commonly used Beta blockers for hypertension and angina .

DOSE:- 12.5-50mg OD

USE:-

Atenolol is used in the treatment of Hypertension (high blood pressure), Angina (heart-related chest pain), Arrhythmia and heart attack.

SIDE EFFECTS:-

Fatigue, Slow heart rate, Cold extremities, Gastrointestinal disturbance. Related to CNS action are less likely.

Chlorthalidone Uses, Side Effects, and More....

Chlorthalidone  Brand name:- Hythalton 50,100mg , Hydrazide, Thalizide ( 12.5, 25) . Chlorthalidone is a diuretic which lowers blood pressure by removing extra water and certain electrolytes from the body. Over time it also relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow. Pharmacodynamic:- Not 🚫 available.  Pharmacokinetics:- Chlortalidone is slowly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral ingestion. It has a long half-life and therefore a prolonged diuretic action, which results in continued diuretic effects despite a skipped dose. This prolonged action of chlortalidone despite missing doses may account for the higher efficacy of chlortalidone compared to the shorter half-life medication, hydrochlorothiazide. Chlortalidone is eliminated from the body mostly by the kidney, as unchanged drug. Thus, in persons with diminished kidney function, the clearance of chlortalidone is reduced and the elimination half-life is increased. As with other thiazide diuretics, ch...

Chlordiazepoxide Uses, Side Effects, and More

Chlordiazepoxide Brand name:- Librium 10, 25 mg tabs; Equilibrium 10mg tab. Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine. It works by increasing the action of a chemical messenger (GABA) which suppresses the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. Pharmacodynamic:-  Chlordiazepoxide has antianxiety, sedative, appetite-stimulating and weak analgesic actions. The drug seems to block EEG arousal from stimulation in the brain stem reticular formation. The drug has been studied extensively in many species of animals and these studies are suggestive of action on the limbic system of the brain, which recent evidence indicates is involved in emotional responses. Hostile monkeys were made tame by oral drug doses which did not cause sedation. Chlordiazepoxide revealed a "taming" action with the elimination of fear and aggression. The taming effect of chlordiazepoxide was further demonstrated in rats made vicious by lesions in the septal area of the brain. The drug dos...
